Alan's professional certification:
Alan has been practicing Yoga for over 25 years. He has a Bachelor
of Science from Waterloo University, a Bachelor of Education from
the University of Toronto, at the high school level, and is a
Registered Yoga Teacher through the East to West Yoga Studio in
Toronto with more advanced teacher credentials from the
Satchidanandan Ashram in Yogaville, Virginia. He is a
standing member of Integral Yoga, which started an international
body that governs the ethics and standards of Yoga teachers and
their classes.
Alan's personal story:
Alan
began his professional life as a Chemist and once he began taking
Yoga he became a vegetarian. Other areas of his life were also
positively affected. Alan wanted to help people more directly. He
began volunteering as a palliative caregiver and became a High
School Science teacher with the York Region District School Board.
Alan continued to follow a Yogic lifestyle by practising Yoga every
day as well as performing helpful volunteering in his
community. He was a founding member of
Character Community
in the GTA, put many hours into helping his own Yoga
teacher's career with advertising and substitute teaching for him,
and began offering free yoga classes on a weekly basis to his
colleagues.
Alan's practise:
Alan keeps up his personal practise of Yoga at
home. He
rises early to complete his breathing exercises (Pranayama), cleansing
exercises (Kriyas) and Meditation. He cycles to and from work in the warmer months to maintain a high
level of cardiovascular fitness as well as to be environmentally conscientious. In the
evening, Alan practices his physical postures to maintain
flexibility, strength, balance, and co-ordination. He reads Yoga books, eats a Yogic diet which consists
of 2/3 alkaline-forming foods and 1/3 acid-forming foods, and
which does not involve the killing of any animals. He maintains a
healthy relationship with his wife, child, friends, neighbours,
colleagues and students. Alan is level-headed, relaxed and good-natured.
His soothing and thoughtful manner is a benefit in
Yoga classes where many students are seeking a teacher who will be
informative and focused on the class.
